5th IAHR International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures


This workshop is the 5th in a successful serie organized by the Hydraulic Structures Committee of IAHR. Previous workshops were held in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal (2006); Pisa, Italy (2008); Edinburgh, Scotland (2010) and Logan, Utah (2012). This 2014 edition will be held in Spa, Belgium near the campus of the University of Liege, some days before River Flow 2014 conference in Switzerland. Switzerland may be reached easily by plane from Belgium.














The objective of the International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures (IJREWHS) is to provide an opportunity for young researchers (typically post-graduate students, but also young researchers and engineers in both public and private sectors) to present/discuss their research in a friendly co-operative and non-competitive environment. During the workshop, authors/presenters receive constructive feedback on their research from their peers and a committee of senior researchers. Based on this feedback, authors will revise their full paper, which will also be reviewed by at least 2 of their peers (workshop participants) and (a) representative(s) of the scientific committee. All papers of appropriate quality will be published in the IJREWHS 2014 proceedings (in open access).

The workshop sessions will be chaired by the junior participants, who will also play a major role in preparing reports and identifying key scientific elements and pending questions for all sessions. Therefore, the main goal is to learn from and help each other in solving scientific and engineering problems.

The IJREWHS addresses conventional and innovative aspects of hydraulic structures design, operation, rehabilitation, and interaction with the environment.

The main topics of the workshop will include (non limitative):

A. New developments in the design, construction, operation, monitoring, maintenance and rehabilitation of hydraulic structures

B. Instrumentation and technology in the laboratory experiments and field tests

C. Numerical modeling

D. Intakes and outlets, spillways, fish ways and energy-dissipating structures

E. Two-phase flow, pipe flow, cavitation, vibration and aeration

F. Environmental and ecological impact of hydraulic structures

G. Interaction between sediment transport and structures

H. Maritime and coastal hydraulic structures

Different approaches are welcome, namely experimental, theoretical and numerical modelling.
